Does anyone know who's opening for the band at their Edmonton, Alberta show? The other two Canadian dates are having either Snow Patrol or Black Eyed Peas, but nothing's been announced (as far as I know) about Edmonton. Info?

Robbie Williams - "Won't Do That"

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 12:49 AM
I couldn't resist to translate this song. I fell in love with it right after I'd heard it.

the original )

P.S. Official lyrics are not released yet so I had to write it down from what I'd heard. When the official lyric will appear I'll compare, because I could hear something wrong.

Learn.Genetics

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 5:21 AM
Over twenty years ago I became fascinated with genetics. Even entered university on scholarships and the such with the aim of studying genetics.

Things happened, things changed, I made certain choices. But had I made other choices, I most likely could have ended up here:

http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/

This is the coolest genetics site ever, possibly the coolest science site ever. Heck, it might even be the coolest site of anything ever!

You tell me this site ain't cool, you're lying.

The cell size comparison is nifty.

Just watched the Doctor Who episode where Ace first appears. This quote was interesting...

"D'you know what I did for a job, when they threw me out of school? I worked as a waitress in a fast-food café. Day in, day out, same boring routine. Same boring life. It was all wrong. It didn't feel like me that was doing it at all. I felt like I'd fallen from another planet, and landed in this strange girl's body. But it wasn't me at all. I was meant to be somewhere else. Each night I'd walk home, and I'd look up at the stars through the gaps in the clouds, and I'd try to imagine where I really came from. I'd dream that one day everything would come right... I'd be carried off back home."

I hear ya, girl.

I forgot to mention, I wrote two letters of complaint about the fiasco when we checked in at the Wembley Stadium Premier Inn. The first time, they tried to fob us off with a vague, unhelpful apology which stunk of being a standard letter, so I sent a follow-up (quoting their "Good Night Guarantee" which promises your money back if you're not 100% satisfied with your stay). And they have now refunded the cost of our first night! We haven't received any sort of letter about this - maybe due to the postal strikes - but Mum noticed the money in her account this week, and transferred half back to me. Woohoo, result! :)

I'm currently reading Great Expectations. We had to study it for GCSE English Lit (12 years ago), although we only had time to read through certain chapters in class, and were supposed to read the rest at home. Which I never did. I probably struggled to find the time, and when I did try, it was just too boring. (Imagine my horror when our teacher was wrong about the likely exam questions, and one involved writing about a character I knew virtually nothing about! Somehow I bluffed my way through anyway, which still amazes me.) I've also seen three different screen adaptations of it - the 1946 film (which we possibly watched in class?), the BBC version that aired in 1999 while the book was still quite fresh in our minds, and more recently the weird modern remake with Gwyneth Paltrow. But because it's been so long and I never did read the book properly, I know I've missed a lot of the fine detail. Last Christmas my friend asked for a Dickens novel and my brother recommended this as being one of the best, so I started to wonder if I'd under-appreciated it, and have been meaning to give it another go. (I still have my GCSE copy, complete with highlighted passages and scribbled notes in the margins.) And you know what... I'm really enjoying it! There's a wonderful humour in the writing, which I don't remember noticing at all when we read the book at school. In fact it's very easy to read, so I don't know why it gave me so much trouble back then - I guess it's a measure of how much my reading has matured in recent years. It also goes to show that picking a book apart for academic purposes can really spoil your enjoyment of it. I like the story so much more, now that I don't have the pressure of essays and exams hanging over me.

This is a great quote from the aforementioned book:

"That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day."

That probably meant nothing to me 12 years ago. It means everything to me now.

And to finish on a random note.... you know every so often there's a massive debate about who should be the next Doctor Who? Ladies and gentlemen, look no further than Martin Hughes-Games (TV wildlife producer / presenter who's been appearing on Springwatch and Autumnwatch this year). He has exactly the right level of eccentricity about him, I can so clearly picture him in the TARDIS. *g* The thought occurred to me during yesterday's show, in a feature where he was measuring and hugging ancient trees and generally rhapsodising about how amazing they were, but unfortunately I don't have a clip of that, unless you can watch iPlayer and you skip to 42 mins. There's also a few other short videos of him on the BBC website, like this one where he's even wearing a scarf, this one where he has a scarf *and* futuristic goggles, this one where he gets to play with a bunch of gadgets including a "time expansion detector", and this and this. Or if you can't play any of those, there's one episode of Springwatch Unsprung on YouTube. His trademark of constantly putting his reading glasses on and off, while his mad hair flops all over his face (they even had to pin it back mid-show on one occasion!) would definitely have to be a key quirk of his Doctor. *g*

I finally got round to sending off my passport renewal application today (my current one expires next month). Moop. I'm quite attached to the old one, considering I've carried it with me everywhere for the last 10 years... I hope it comes back to me safely. I doubt I'll have the same feelings about the new one, as I absolutely loathe my latest passport photo (I was trying to look neutral and came out looking miserable!) but couldn't be arsed to re-do it. The very nice lady at the Post Office who checked through my form said she was delighted with how neatly I'd filled it in - apparently lots of people make a right mess of it! The only thing I had to change was scribbling out the details of Mum's passport which I was included on as a child. The instructions had clearly stated you must tell them about *every* passport you've *ever* been included on, so we went to all the trouble of digging out this ancient one, only to be told it shouldn't be mentioned on the form after all. Riiiight...! Anyway, that's done now. Just last night I saw a load of horror stories on TV about the passport service, so I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that none of my documents go astray!

I've just been watching U2's Brandenburg Gate performance from last night. Ha, I knew they'd play One, although the rest of the setlist was anyone's guess - shame they didn't play Stay or any other Achtung Baby tracks! Ah well. Now, is it safe to assume Willie Williams was responsible for the awesome lighting (transforming the Gate into U2's very own giant video screen)? Because that was by far the most impressive thing about this gig. Seriously, check this shit out!! So, so cool. And I'm glad they played Magnificent, because it was an opportunity to FINALLY give this song the light show it's been screaming out for all year! They could still do more with it, but that is much closer to what I've been imagining, than anything I've seen up till now. It needs that darkness and the bright white flashing lights, it's a proper nighttime song and always has been. I wish the promo video had looked more like this! Thank you thank you thank you Willie. (I can't see this being the work of any other creative genius.) Shame the gig and awards don't appear to be getting shown on TV here, this year. :(

OMG!!! I've heard the beginning of Robbie's song "Blasphemy" and I thought it was "This Is It" by Michael O_O I even compared. The beginning is really almost the same.

The only disadvantage of new Robbie's album is that it's very short. More, Robbie, more!!! I can't say more so far.

OMG!! Услышала первые аккорды песни Робби "Blasphemy" и подумала, что это "This Is It" Майкла О_О Я даже сравнила.

I already took dust covers on disks and put them on the shelf, but then I remembered that I have forgotten to make a photoshoot for them :D So here they are.

[info]gotselena posted a quote in her entry in the community and I really like it:

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” -Helen Keller

-Helen Keller

Moonwalk by Michael Jackson

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 2:20 AM
Today I've received two parcels at once! There are:
- Book Moonwalk
- CD This Is It
- CD & DVD Tina Live
- T-Shirt P!nk (unfortunately there is a problem with it, but it was delivered anyway).

The book has a special meaning, that's why I'll show it :) I thought that the original edition was smaller, that's why I didn't expect the book to be that big. It definitely doesn't fit my bag, but I really want to read it again having a real book. Lately I extremely enjoy not only reading books, I just like to hold them in my hands.

10 more pics from the book /

Moonwalk
- CD This Is It
- CD & DVD Tina Live
